How to Calculate Salary From Hourly, Weekly, Monthly or Annual Pay: Formula, Examples and Salary Calculator

Salary Calculator

Salary can be expressed in several different ways. A job may advertise an hourly wage, while your budget may be easier to understand using weekly, monthly, or annual income.

For example, if you earn:

$25 per hour

and work:

40 hours per week

for:

52 weeks per year

your estimated annual gross pay is:

$52,000 per year

A Salary Calculator makes these conversions easy. It can help convert hourly, weekly, monthly, and annual pay so you can compare earnings using the same time period.

These calculations generally represent gross pay before taxes and deductions, unless the calculator specifically includes those items.

What Is Gross Salary?

Gross salary is your earnings before deductions such as taxes, retirement contributions, insurance premiums, or other payroll deductions.

For example:

Annual Gross Salary = $52,000

This does not necessarily mean you receive $52,000 as spendable take-home pay.

Your actual take-home amount may be lower after applicable deductions.

So it is important to understand:

GROSS PAY ≠ TAKE-HOME PAY

Basic Salary Conversion Formula

If you know your hourly wage, estimated annual pay can be calculated as:

Annual Pay = Hourly Rate × Hours per Week × Weeks per Year

Example:

$25/hour × 40 hours × 52 weeks

=

$52,000/year

This assumes you are paid for all 52 weeks at the stated hours. Unpaid leave, variable hours, overtime, bonuses, and other factors can change actual earnings.

Example 1 — $20 Per Hour

Suppose you earn:

$20/hour

and work:

40 hours/week

Estimated weekly pay:

$20 × 40

=

$800/week

Estimated annual pay using 52 paid weeks:

$800 × 52

=

$41,600/year

Average monthly equivalent:

$41,600 ÷ 12

=

$3,466.67/month

Example 2 — $25 Per Hour

Hourly rate:

$25

Hours per week:

40

Weekly pay:

25 × 40 = $1,000

Annual pay:

$1,000 × 52

=

$52,000

Average monthly pay:

$52,000 ÷ 12

=

$4,333.33

Therefore:

$25/hour ≈ $52,000/year

under these assumptions.

Example 3 — $30 Per Hour

Using 40 hours per week and 52 paid weeks:

$30 × 40 = $1,200/week

Then:

$1,200 × 52

=

$62,400/year

Average monthly equivalent:

$62,400 ÷ 12

=

$5,200/month

Quick Hourly-to-Salary Table

Assuming 40 hours per week × 52 paid weeks = 2,080 hours per year:

Hourly RateWeeklyAvg. MonthlyAnnual
$15$600$2,600$31,200
$20$800$3,466.67$41,600
$25$1,000$4,333.33$52,000
$30$1,200$5,200$62,400
$40$1,600$6,933.33$83,200
$50$2,000$8,666.67$104,000

These are gross-pay estimates based on the stated assumptions.

Annual Salary to Hourly Rate

You can reverse the calculation.

Use:

Hourly Rate = Annual Salary ÷ Annual Work Hours

For a 40-hour workweek over 52 paid weeks:

40 × 52 = 2,080 hours

Suppose your annual salary is:

$52,000

Calculation:

$52,000 ÷ 2,080

=

$25/hour

Annual Salary to Monthly Pay

For a simple average monthly equivalent:

Monthly Pay = Annual Salary ÷ 12

Example:

$60,000 ÷ 12

=

$5,000/month

This is an average monthly gross amount. Actual paycheck timing depends on the employer’s pay schedule.

For official wage and salary information by occupation, you can also explore the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data.

Annual Salary to Weekly Pay

Use:

Weekly Pay = Annual Salary ÷ 52

Example:

$52,000 ÷ 52

=

$1,000/week

Again, this assumes the annual salary represents a full 52-week year.

Monthly Salary to Annual Salary

Use:

Annual Salary = Monthly Salary × 12

Example:

$4,000/month × 12

=

$48,000/year

Weekly Pay to Annual Pay

Use:

Annual Pay = Weekly Pay × Paid Weeks

If paid for 52 weeks:

$900 × 52

=

$46,800/year

If you are not paid for all 52 weeks, use the actual number of paid weeks instead.

What About Biweekly Pay?

Biweekly normally means payment every two weeks.

A year typically contains:

26 biweekly pay periods

So an annual salary of:

$52,000

can be estimated as:

$52,000 ÷ 26

=

$2,000 per biweekly pay period

This is different from semimonthly pay.

Biweekly vs Semimonthly

These terms are often confused.

Biweekly

Usually:

Every 2 weeks

Approximately:

26 pay periods/year

Semimonthly

Usually:

Twice per month

Therefore:

24 pay periods/year

For a $52,000 annual salary:

Biweekly:
$52,000 ÷ 26 = $2,000

Semimonthly:
$52,000 ÷ 24 ≈ $2,166.67

Both represent the same annual gross salary, but the pay-period amounts differ.

Paid Weeks Matter

A common salary estimate uses:

52 weeks/year

But this may not be appropriate for every worker.

Suppose someone earns:

$25/hour

works:

40 hours/week

but is paid for only:

48 weeks

Then:

$25 × 40 × 48

=

$48,000/year

Compared with 52 paid weeks:

$25 × 40 × 52

=

$52,000/year

That’s a difference of:

$4,000

So the number of paid weeks can matter significantly.

What About Overtime?

Basic salary conversions usually assume a regular hourly rate.

Overtime may be paid differently depending on the employer, employment agreement, and applicable laws.

For example, if a worker receives a different rate after a certain number of hours, simply multiplying all hours by the normal hourly rate may produce an inaccurate result.

Therefore:

Regular Pay + Overtime + Bonuses ≠ Basic Salary Conversion

unless your calculator specifically supports these inputs.

Gross Pay vs Net Pay

This distinction is important.

💵 Gross Pay

Income before deductions.

💳 Net Pay

Amount remaining after applicable deductions.

Possible deductions can include:

  • Taxes
  • Insurance
  • Retirement contributions
  • Payroll deductions
  • Other authorized deductions

A basic Salary Calculator normally estimates:

GROSS PAY

not exact take-home pay.
