Knowing how many months have passed between two dates can be useful for contracts, subscriptions, projects, employment periods, rentals, financial planning, and personal milestones.
Although the calculation may look simple, calendar months have different lengths. Some contain 30 days, others 31 days, while February contains 28 or 29 days.
Because of these differences, calculating calendar months is not always the same as dividing the number of days by 30.
A Months Between Dates Calculator makes the process easier by comparing a start date and an end date and determining the elapsed calendar period.
What Does “Months Between Dates” Mean?
The months between two dates describe how much calendar time separates them.
For example:
Start Date: January 15, 2026
End Date: April 15, 2026
The difference is:
3 Months
The dates have the same day of the month, so this example is straightforward.
Basic Month Difference
When both dates have the same day number, you can often calculate the difference using the year and month values.
Calendar months can contain different numbers of days, so the exact number of months between two dates can depend on the specific calendar dates involved. Learn more about calendar structure from the U.S. Naval Observatory.
A useful formula is:
Total Months = (Year Difference × 12) + Month Difference
Example:
January 15, 2026 → July 15, 2026
Year difference:
0
Month difference:
7 − 1 = 6
Therefore:
6 Months
Example 1 — 3 Months Apart
Start:
January 10, 2026
End:
April 10, 2026
Count the calendar months:
January → February = 1
February → March = 2
March → April = 3
Result:
3 Months
Example 2 — 6 Months Apart
Start:
March 15, 2026
End:
September 15, 2026
Result:
6 Months
Example 3 — Dates Across Different Years
Start:
October 1, 2025
End:
April 1, 2026
Count:
October → November → December → January → February → March → April
Result:
6 Months
The formula also works:
Year difference = 1
Month difference = 4 − 10 = −6
Therefore:
(1 × 12) + (−6) = 6 months
Example 4 — More Than One Year
Start:
January 1, 2025
End:
July 1, 2026
Calculation:
1 year = 12 months
plus:
January → July = 6 months
Therefore:
18 Months
This can also be expressed as:
1 Year and 6 Months
What About Partial Months?
Dates do not always fall on the same day of the month.
For example:
January 15 → April 5
There are not three complete calendar months between these dates because April 15 has not yet been reached.
Depending on the purpose and the calculator’s rules, the result may be represented as complete months plus remaining days or another clearly defined calendar difference.
This is why it is important to distinguish between:
Complete Calendar Months
and
Approximate Months Based on Days
For contracts, billing, subscriptions, or other formal purposes, always use the method required by the relevant agreement or organization.
Months Are Not a Fixed Number of Days
One of the most important things to remember is:
1 month does not always equal 30 days
For example:
January = 31 days
February = 28 or 29 days
April = 30 days
July = 31 days
So simply calculating:
Total Days ÷ 30
provides only an approximation, not necessarily the number of complete calendar months.
Leap Years
Leap years can also affect the exact number of days between dates.
February normally contains:
28 days
During a leap year:
February = 29 days
This matters when you want an exact day count alongside the number of calendar months.
Months Between Dates vs Adding Months
These two calculations are related, but they answer different questions.

Add or Subtract Months
You know one date and want to calculate another:
January 15 + 6 Months
